Dimitris Avramopoulos

Dimitris Avramopoulos is a Greek politician and Member of the
Hellenic Parliament who served as the European Union
Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship
from 2014 to 2019.
Throughout his career in the Greek government, Mr.
Avramopoulos has held several key ministerial positions,
including Minister of National Defence (two terms), Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Minister of Health and Social Solidarity, and
Minister of Tourism.
Additionally, he served two terms as Mayor of Athens. Before
transitioning to a political career, Mr. Avramopoulos served in
the Greek Diplomatic Service, where he held various positions
and posts, including Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, Director of the Diplomatic Cabinet of the Greek Prime
Minister, Consul of Greece in Liège (Belgium), General Consul
in Geneva (Switzerland), and Representative to the Conference
on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE/Vienna).
His academic background includes degrees in Public Law and
Political Sciences from the University of Athens, complemented
by postgraduate studies in European Studies from the Institute
of European Affairs of the Université Libre de Bruxelles
(Belgium).
Furthermore, his contributions to academia have been
recognized through honorary doctorates from prestigious
universities in New York, Philadelphia, and London (e.g.,
Adelphi, Drexel, Kingston, Deree), as well as honorary
professorships at renowned institutions such as the School of
International Studies at Peking University and the European
College of Parma. In recognition of his distinguished public
service, Mr. Avramopoulos has been awarded as honorary
citizen in more than 40 cities across Greece and 36 cities
internationally.
He has also been bestowed with awards and state decorations
from numerous countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus,
Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece,
Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania,
Spain, Sweden, the Vatican, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and
Lebanon), as well as from the Ecumenical Orthodox
Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Orthodox Patriarchate of
Jerusalem, and the Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria.
